Larry V Dykstra retired following a successful business career working on a well-known brands where he specialized in customer insights, marketing strategy, and innovation.

Larry is the author of four books that cover diverse subjects and worlds buts hare an underlying belief that it is through our stories that we come to understand two contradictory truths: (1) each one of us in unique, and (2) we all have much in common.

Larry is grateful for the countless teachers, friends, coaches, and role models who inspired him to be a lifelong learner.

Following his retirement, Larry pursued diverse experiences intended to stretch him as a person. These activities explored broad themes: playing music with and for others, serving hospitalized children, and exploring matters of sprirituality and healing, and engaging in physical activity. Along the way, he found that stringing words together on paper was a useful tool for helping process his thoughts and find meaning.

Three years ago, I dusted off my baseball glove and signed up to play a sport I had been away from for more than 40 years. While my basic skills improved surprisingly fast, I struggled to cope with the failures and foibles that have come to define a team capable of losing an astounding 88 consecutive games. Playing with the Ol Pros senior softball team has forced me to confront my competitive nature while teaching me how to accept failure. More than the story of a group of senior citizens playing a child’s game, Learning to Lose represents a metaphor about what truly matters in life.
